“Early Polish Modernism and Its Shadow”
In the late nineteenth century, disputes over Polish modernity took place differently than in most western countries. A classic argument had two vectors: loyalist and resistant. The first generally agrees with the western model of modernization and admits to the trans-historical value of the progress of science, technology and the capitalist economy, within the framework of state administration. The vector of political resistance, after the January Uprising, takes a different character than Polish romanticism in exile practiced. It does not only mean independence activities, but the fact that any private and social activities should be verified via the criterion of contributing to the national benefit. Every Pole should work for the shadow of a country, which is not on the map, but nonetheless which flared for a while during national uprisings. Here is this shadow that Józef Piłsudski, in his speech “The Year 1863”, called the “shadow of the greatness of the National Government.”
This talk examines how Polish prose of the second half of the nineteenth century acquires, preserves and transfers this point in the twentieth century and beyond. But also how she tries to escape this reduction and to gain autonomy of art.
Ryszard Koziołek – literaturoznawca, eseista, nauczyciel akademicki, profesor w Instytucie Nauk o Literaturze Polskiej im. Ireneusza Opackiego Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, dyrektor Kolegium Indywidualnych Studiów Międzyobszarowych Uniwersytetu Śląskiego. W 2010 r. otrzymał Nagrodę Literacką GDYNIA w kategorii eseistyka za książkę pt. Ciała Sienkiewicza. Studia o symbolice płci i przemocy (Katowice 2009). Zajmuje się historią i teorią powieści nowoczesnej. Wydał również: Zdobyć historię (1999) i Znakowanie trawy (2011). Publikuje m.in. w „Tygodniku Powszechnym”, „Gazecie Wyborczej”, „Polityce”.Ostatnio wydał: Dobrze się myśli literaturą (Wołowiec 2016). W 2017 r. otrzymał Nagrodę im. Kazimierza Wyki za osiągnięcia w dziedzinie eseistyki oraz krytyki literackiej i artystycznej.
