POL/THTR 140 – Polish Drama in Translation: “Between Two Worlds: Experimental Theater in Poland”

Discover the radical history of Polish Theater — an experimental and socially engaged art form that has influenced theater-makers worldwide. In this class we will explore theater in Poland as a space “Between Two Worlds” –between the real and the metaphysical, tradition and modernity, politics and art. We’ll enter Mrozek’s Theater of the Absurd; Grotowski’s Physical Theater, Kantor’s Theater of Death; as well as Futurism, Apocalypticism, and contemporary children’s theater from present-day Poland. Light Reading Load, Discussion-based classes, including group readings and film showings.

POL 460 – Olga Tokarczuk: Texts and Contexts. Art, Activism, and the Transnational Landscapes of Polish Literature

In this class we will get to know one of Poland’s most world-renowned contemporary authors, Olga Tokarczuk, recipient of the 2018 Nobel Prize for Literature. Tokarczuk has challenged and charmed her readers with brave works in a range of genres and styles, from the magical realist “Primeval and Other Times” to the eco-crime novel “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead;” from her constellation novel “Flights” to the bestselling historical epic, newly translated into English, “The Books of Jacob”. Studying Tokarczuk’s works, we consider social, political and artistic debates that are defining Poland and the EU today, as well as cultural, literary and philosophical influences that inspired Tokarczuk and with which her works are in conversation. In light of the outbreak of war in Ukraine in March 2022, our study of “contexts” will include reading the work of several contemporary Ukrainian authors and poets, who, much like Tokarczuk, use their writings to explore what it means for a national literature (Ukrainian or Polish) to emerge as a multicultural and multilingual space of encounter. Taught in English, with the option to read in the Polish or Yiddish original.
